Sore Neck From Sitting at Your Desk All Day? Here Is What Is Going On
If your neck is stiff, sore or tight by the time you log off each day, you are not alone. Neck pain from desk work is one of the most common complaints we treat at PHYZFIT in Bexley North and Marrickville. The good news is it responds beautifully to the right physiotherapy plan, and you do not have to live with it.

Why Your Neck Hurts From Desk Work
Around 70 percent of Australians work in white collar jobs, which means most of us spend the bulk of our day in front of a screen. Hours of static posture, head tilted slightly forward, shoulders rolled in, makes your deep neck muscles work overtime while the rest of your body switches off.
The structures that take the hit are the small joints at the base of your skull, the muscles that run along the side and back of your neck, and the upper trapezius muscles across the top of your shoulders. Over weeks and months that constant low grade load creates the stiffness, ache and headaches that you have probably learned to live with.
Common Symptoms
If you are experiencing any of the following, our physios at PHYZFIT can help:
- A constant dull ache at the base of your neck or top of your shoulders
- Sharp pain when you turn your head to check your blind spot in the car
- Stiffness when you first sit down at your desk and again when you stand up
- Tension headaches that build through the afternoon
- Pain that creeps into the shoulder blade area
- Tingling or numbness travelling into the arm or hand
- A clicky or grinding feeling when you turn your head
- Jaw tightness or clenching, often linked to upper neck tension
- Trouble getting comfortable in bed at the end of the day
Common Causes
- Poorly set up workstation with monitor too low, too high or off to the side
- Looking down at a laptop or phone for hours at a time
- Sitting in the same position for long stretches without moving
- Weak deep neck stabilisers and mid back muscles
- Tight upper trapezius and levator scapulae from chronic guarding
- Stress related muscle tension that builds across the shoulders
- Poor sleep position or an unsupportive pillow
- Cervicogenic factors driving headaches from the upper neck joints
- Old whiplash injuries or sports injuries that never fully resolved

How We Treat Desk Worker Neck Pain
At PHYZFIT our physiotherapists take a thorough evidence based approach. Every treatment plan is built around your goals, your workspace and your body.
Accurate Diagnosis
We pinpoint exactly which structures are irritated, which joints are stiff and which muscles are overworking, so you know what is actually going on and what to do about it.
Hands On Therapy
Targeted joint mobilisation, soft tissue release and dry needling to settle the tight, painful areas quickly so you can start moving freely.
Deep Neck and Mid Back Strengthening
Rebuilding the small postural muscles that should be doing the work, so your upper traps stop having to compensate. This is the part that makes results last.
Workstation and Posture Coaching
We look at how your desk, chair, monitor and laptop are set up and make practical changes that take load off your neck for every hour of every workday.
Headache Management
If your neck pain comes with headaches, we treat the upper cervical joints and muscles that drive cervicogenic headaches, often with rapid relief.

What You Should Not Do
Most of the well meaning advice for desk worker neck pain misses the mark. Avoid these traps:
- Aggressively cracking or twisting your own neck for relief. It feels good for 30 seconds and trains the joint to keep getting stuck.
- Endlessly rolling your shoulders or stretching your upper traps. Stretching a chronically overworked muscle does not fix the reason it is overworking.
- Buying a $400 ergonomic chair before getting an actual assessment. Sometimes the chair is fine and the issue is your monitor height.
- Taking anti inflammatories every day to push through. They mask the signal without addressing why the pain is there.
- Assuming you need an MRI. The vast majority of desk worker neck pain does not require any imaging at all.
Do not leave this untreated. Many of our patients tell us they wished they had come in sooner. Desk worker neck pain that gets brushed off has a habit of becoming a chronic problem that follows you into your weekends, your sleep and eventually your training. People who tolerate it for years end up with tension headaches, jaw pain and shoulder issues piled on top of the original neck problem. Catch it early and most cases settle inside 4 to 8 weeks of focused treatment.
Stop scrolling. Start moving.
Whether your neck has been sore for a fortnight or five years, our team at PHYZFIT will build you a plan that actually works.

When to Book In Immediately
See a physiotherapist or your GP sooner rather than later if you have any of these:
- Numbness, pins and needles or weakness travelling into your arm or hand
- Severe headaches that started suddenly or are not improving
- Dizziness, visual changes or balance issues alongside neck pain
- Neck pain after a car accident, fall or sports collision
- Sharp pain that wakes you at night and will not settle
- Loss of grip strength or trouble holding a cup or pen
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does desk worker neck pain take to fix?
Most cases settle inside 4 to 8 weeks of focused physiotherapy combined with workstation changes. Longstanding chronic cases take longer but absolutely improve.
Do I need to buy a special chair or standing desk?
Not necessarily. The right setup matters far more than the brand of furniture. Your physio will give you specific changes that make a difference for your body and your workspace.
Can stretching fix my neck pain on its own?
Stretching gives short term relief but rarely solves the underlying problem. Most desk worker neck pain needs targeted strengthening of the deep stabilisers, joint work and workstation correction to genuinely resolve.
Are headaches really linked to my neck?
Yes. Cervicogenic headaches start in the upper neck joints and refer pain up into the head and behind the eyes. Treating the neck often resolves the headaches at the same time.
Do I need a referral to see a physio at PHYZFIT?
No referral is needed. You can book online or over the phone and we will take care of the rest. We are registered with Medicare, all major Private Health funds, NDIS, SIRA, WorkCover and DVA.
